The female clergy role consists of many varied responsibilities that have the potential for introducing stress into the life of the clergywoman, and it may produce negative health and well-being effects. This study explored the health-promoting behaviors, stress management, and spiritual well-being of female clergy who function in leadership positions in various ministries. Guided by the theoretical underpinnings of Vroom's expectancy theory and Bandura's social cognitive theory to comprise Pender's Health Promotion Model, the purpose of this nonexperimental quantitative descriptive correlational design study was accomplished. It examined the extent to which spiritual well-being and stress management of female clergy relate to how healthy their lifestyle is, based on the frequency of their engagement in healthy behaviors. The sample of 67 participants was randomly selected from clergy lists representing the population of female clergy who provide pastoral leadership or other church-based ministry leadership in a Christian church, or non-pastoral leadership in other settings that are Christ-centered ministries in different locations across the United States. They were representative of various Christian denominations, including non-denominational designation. A demographic survey, the Health Promoting Lifestyle Profile II survey, and the Clergy Spiritual Well-being Survey were administered online through Qualtrics, an online research company. Data were analyzed to answer two research questions: The first sought to determine if a relationship exists between the healthy lifestyle, measured by the HPLP II score, and spiritual well-being, measured by the CSW-BS score of female clergy leaders. The second sought to determine if a relationship exists between their stress management, measured by the Stress Management domain of the HPLP II, and their CSW-BS score. Findings indicate that a significant weak positive relationship exists between the respondents' HPLP II and CSW-BS scores and their Stress Management and CSW-BS scores. The female clergy leaders' stress management and spiritual well-being appear to relate to their degree of healthy lifestyle. Future research should include sampling that includes greater variety of denominations and racial or ethnic groups to ensure application of results more broadly, as well as qualitative studies and evaluation research to assess efficacy of implemented health promotion strategies.
