The purpose of this quantitative study was to compare the leadership styles among African Americans working in the nonprofit and for-profit sectors. Identifying the leadership characteristics and behaviors of a for-profit leader as compared to a nonprofit leader may impact African American's decision to work in an employment sector most closely related to their leadership style. The researcher used the Full Range Leadership Model Theory (FRLT), developed by Bass and Avolio (1994) which is comprised of three distinct leadership styles: transformational, transactional and laissez-faire. Transformational leaders are visionary and guide their followers to go beyond their interests while considering the moral and ethical implications of their actions and goals. Transactional leaders' interactions are based on an exchange of action and reward. Whereas these leaders are guided by rules and regulations, laissez-faire leaders avoid making decisions (Avolio, Bass, & Jung, 1995). Using the Multifactor Leadership Questionnaire (Bass & Avolio, 1994), provided a profile of the characteristics of each style of leaders in both sectors. The results of the research reported no statistically significant differences in transformational, transactional and laissez-faire leadership styles for African Americans who are working in for-profit and nonprofit. However, it is worth noting that after grouping the job titles by senior management titles as compared to manager and/or other job categories, there was a statistically significant difference in specific constructs within transactional and transformational leadership styles in both for-profit and nonprofit sectors.
