This study explores the engagement of African American-led VC firm leaders in the private capital marketplace. The African American-led VC firm contributes to entrepreneurial wealth-building strategies through providing capital to the business owner presenting an innovation or product that has the potential to return 10 times the financial investment. I developed a research question to explore the experiences of the leadership level of African American-led VC firms, "How do members of the community of African Americans working in the private capital industry describe opportunities, barriers, and success?" Employing an ethnographic research methodology, this study identifies the community of African Americans with careers in private equity. Using public data sources-LinkedIn, YouTube, websites, and private communications--this research explored barriers and opportunities as voiced by members of the community of African Americans in private equity. The most frequently mentioned barrier is the persistence of myths and stereotypes about African American-led firms even though the myths have been proven false. Systemic structures constrain African American growth in the private capital industry to under 3% AUM. Exploring the pathways community members faced traveling to leading a venture capital firm provided a view into systemic structures. A key finding is that industry policies and practices create disparities between businesses that are advantaged and those that are disadvantaged. Study results add to scholarship on African American participation in the private equity marketplace. Extending theories of counterframing, racialized entrepreneurship, and stratification economics, this study expands scholarship on African American entrepreneurship.
