Teaching pronunciation is often overlooked as a topic of direct instruction in the adult EFL classroom despite a strong desire among students to understand and improve pronunciation for better communication. According to Kodirova and Heinrichsen (2022), many instructors of adult EFL students feel unprepared to offer direct instruction of pronunciation, especially when using the International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA). To address the discrepancy, this project design is a dual-faceted workshop for adult EFL instructors. In part one, the case for direct instruction of the IPA is made along with an introduction to the phonetic symbols themselves. In part two, concrete examples using the IPA for pronunciation instruction are offered for immediate use. Adult EFL instructors will complete the workshop having gained a better understanding of the benefits of the IPA, the specifics of the IPA phonetic symbols, and activities that put the IPA to use in the classroom.
