This dissertation aims to explore whether overweight and obese children would be more likely to experience subsequent improvements in environmental conditions compared to normal weight children, and to explore how environmental factors are mediated to children's behaviors and health outcomes based on systems simulations. First, we examined 19,770 children's and their families' improvement in physical activity (PA) and family environment based on the Early Childhood Longitudinal Study from 1998-2004. Overweight and obese children continued to be more inactive over time than their normal weight counterparts: watching TV for longer time (by +0.09 hour/day, p<0.05) and less frequent moderate-to-vigorous-intensity PA (MVPA) (by -0.26 times/week, p<0.001). Overweight and obese children continued to eat fewer breakfast at regular time (~by -0.1 time/week, p<0.05) than normal weight children. TV rules at home would be more likely to appear in obese children's families than normal weight children's families, but this was only significant for families that did not have this rule at baseline. The findings suggest that children's physical inactivity and obesogenic family routines could be already established at children's very young age. The second study examined whether school physical activity-related environment would be improved in response to higher prevalence of obesity and inactivity in school. School time allocated to physical education (PE) increased the fastest among schools with high prevalence of low MVPA (+3.10 min/year, SE=0.82, p<0.001) than schools with lower prevalence of low MVPA (+1.74 min/year, SE=0.81, p=0.03), and weekly recess time decreased the slowest among the former group (-3.81 min/year, SE=1.33, p=0.004) than the latter group (-7.30 min/year, SE=1.31, p<0.001). Higher prevalence of obesity might be associated with less cut in weekly recess time, and associated with less increment in weekly time for PE class. The third study simulated the interactions between children and the school environment using systems science models, i.e., agent-based model (ABM) at the playground-level with setups of duration of physical education, number of water fountain and vending machine. Considering the body water dynamics under exercise, the demand of rehydration due to sweating drives children to use water fountains and/or vending machines. A longer duration of PE class would create higher prevalence of dehydrated status at the end of class. Under the decision rule of time-saving, children's energy expenditure was partly offset when vending machine is present. Nevertheless, the more water fountains would reduce this effect of vending machines. The ABM simulation demonstrated that improving physical activity-related environment and food environment in school has to be considered together for effective energy expenditure promotion. This dissertation presented that obese children may not well improve their own PA and/or experience the improvement of family environment. A larger scale, like school, environment may be modified in response to students' obesity. Moreover, modifying the environment should take a systems perspective so that unintended consequences (e.g. offset of energy expenditure and dehydration) can be prevented or reduced.
