This body of work analyzes social dance and accompanied songs as embodied memory technologies. These rituals are crucial to transferring cultural and didactic information across generations and acting as a means of social discourse and psychophysical therapy. Folk, cultural, and martial dances from across the globe also archive and communicate narrative, categorical, and combative information. The art forms evolve and, in more than one case, manifest as a means of colonial resistance. This thesis also investigates the benefits of ritual-social dance through the lens of dance movement therapy and contemporary street dance. Both psychosocial practices demonstrate bodily movement's use as a personal communication tool and a means of accessing subconscious experiences often inaccessible to language. Finally, this thesis examines the similarities of contemporary mnemonics with indigenous dance and song line practices. Based on this information, this book cites contemporary experiments that incorporate systems for memorization with kinetic and rhythmic elements alongside existing visual and spatial techniques. These practices would empower high school and collegiate with tools to create their own embodied learning patterns and participate in effective group learning rituals.Through this collective body of research, this thesis presents an argument in favor of incorporating these systems to boost outcomes in existing learning environments- i.e., integrating a ritual dance and song line component into learning pedagogy. By refamiliarizing ourselves with highly effective tools from the past, we may better equip ourselves for the future.
