Hypertension is the leading risk factor for developing heart disease, the number one killer in the world. Hypertension is largely preventable with psychological and lifestyle factors, yet it is difficult to treat. Moreover, despite the wide use of meditations, both with and without movement, medications remain the standard means of treating hypertension. Previous research has suggested both meditation techniques may decrease blood pressure and improve health. The purpose of this population-based study was to examine lifestyle and levels of psychological, physical, and perceived health alongside gender and racial differences in a large, representative, national sample of current meditation without movement users (mantra and mindfulness), moving meditation users (yoga, Tai Chi, and Qi Gong), users of both meditation techniques, and nonusers with hypertension. The study used Engel's biopsychosocialspiritualmodel as a foundation. Because meditations with and without movement are fundamentally different practices, research questions explored if health levels of current practitioners differ from each other and if results obtained in previous clinical trials were generalizable to the national population. Reasons for use or non use of meditations were also explored. Archival data were collected in the 2007 National Health Institute Survey. Participants included 5,461 adults of all ethnicities, with hypertension. Results of the factorial ANOVAs indicated individuals in the moving meditation group had the highest levels of psychological health, physical health, and lifestyle/health behaviors, especially if they were White. Most participants reported using meditation techniques for wellness and disease prevention. The positive social change implications include increased social awareness through education about potential health benefits of meditation techniques for individuals with hypertension.
