The purpose of this exploratory qualitative study was to explore sustainability implementation within the United States military. The problem of the study is that the progress on sustainability initiatives within the military has not been established. The research question asked, what are the strategies environmental affairs managers need to improve sustainability practices in a U.S. military organization? The exploratory qualitative study used semi-structured interviews to gain information from eight retired key personnel or previous employees of a specific military installation within one geographic location. Data was analyzed by coding themes with the use of NVivo 12. The emergent themes included: (a) Theme 1: Military Hierarchy; Sub-theme 1.1: Mission, Operations, and Training; Sub-theme 1.2: Management, Command, and Plan; (b) Theme 2: Sustainability Factors; Sub-theme 2.1: Economics Budget, Finances, Funding, Money; Sub-theme 2.2: Society, Stakeholders, Military Members, Personnel; Sub-theme 2.3: Environment, Natural Resources, Animal Populations and Species, Forest Management and Vegetation, Sub-theme 2.4: Indicators, Hazardous waste, air emissions, water usage, energy usage, waste management and recycling. The key findings suggest progress on sustainability initiatives within the military have been found and strategies exist to reach sustainability goals and implement activities within a military organization.
