In present-day Christian-Muslim dialogue, the letter A Common Word Between Us and You acts as a catalyst, prompting creative collaboration between Muslim and Christian scholars to assess the real-world implications of each tradition's unique, particular theologies of love (Madigan, 2008). Both the Document on Human Fraternity, as a joint Muslim-Catholic venture, and Pope Francis's encyclical Fratelli Tutti, through a Catholic lens, define the urgent problems of our time through an orientation to love of God. Theologians now face the challenge to systematically contextualize, assess, and provide insights toward effectively treating these defined, urgent problem sets, and address the chasm that exists between eschatological vision and proximate realities. This dissertation (1) proposes that a comparative theological framework of hope and fear may advance the joint Muslim-Christian initiative to respond to the urgent problems of our time through an orientation to love of God and love of neighbor; (2) outlines the significance of the theological orientation of the virtue of hope and fear in the Muslim and Christian traditions through an initial comparative reading of Abu Ḥamid Muḥammad ibn Muḥammad al-Ghazali's and Saint Thomas Aquinas' accounts of hope and fear. Using the initial comparative theological framework, this dissertation then (3) develops, collects and evaluates results of mixed-methods surveys of Muslims' and Christians' self-understanding, practices and sources of navigating fear and cultivating hope, and adapts recent work of moral theologians who use psycho-social methods to enliven thicker descriptions of virtue.Findings from the research include, first, the quantitatively significant predictive relationship between respondent's relationship to God and measurements of hopefulness; second, the quantitative significance and qualitative relevance of particular, habituated practices in predicting respondent's relationship to God; and third, the quantitative significance of friendship and qualitative descriptions of community corresponding to fear and hope. Especially evident in the second phase of data sampling were the descriptions by respondents of experiencing fear while also exhibiting high rates of hope. The descriptions of the effect of fear on participants opened a door to consider the positive role of fear in prompting action and relationship to God and others, cultivating pathways of hope. The remainder of the dissertation (4) integrates emergent patterns from lived religion into a triangulated reading on theological hope and fear, with results informing and refining the initial comparative theological study. Finally, the dissertation (5) applies a Christian-Muslim comparative theological framework to interpret two U.S. contexts, to begin to solidify how the key findings of the comparative study may inform the efforts of faith-based practitioners in a variety of contexts. The framework aims to inform agents striving to respond to real fears and build cultures of resilient hope within their faith-based communal structures.
