The research study focused on examining the cultural fairness of the computerized memory interference test (CMIT) in its picture version (CMIT-P) and Kanji version (CMIT-K) among Asian language speakers. The study initially compared the performance of Asian language-speaking college students and monolingual English-speaking students on the CMIT-P and CMIT-K. It then compared American-born Chinese (ABC) students to their monolingual English-speaking peers on both versions of the tests. Furthermore, it compared Chinese-speaking and Japanese-speaking groups within the Asian language-speaking cohort to evaluate the cultural fairness of CMIT-P and CMIT-K. The data was gathered from archived records of college students at UCLA and was analyzed using parametric tests (two independent sample t-tests and One-Way MANOVA) for the CMIT-P and non-parametric tests (Mann-Whitney test and Kruskal-Wallis test) for the CMIT-K due to significant differences in sample sizes between groups. The results indicated no performance differences between groups on the CMIT-P, while differences in performance were observed on the CMIT-K, particularly in Books 1, 2, and 4. This study supports previous findings on the cultural fairness of the CMIT-P and provides initial evidence of cultural unfairness associated with the CMIT-K. In conclusion, the study improves our understanding of performance variations in the CMIT-P and CMIT-K, highlighting the significant impact of culture and language in memory testing and neuropsychological assessment. It emphasizes the need for culturally sensitive tools to ensure accurate testing outcomes and calls for further research into the CMIT and its application to Asian populations.
