Suicide is the third leading cause of death among Hispanic and Latino Americans age 10‒ 24 years, and only 36% of Hispanic and Latino Americans received mental health services compared to 52% of non-Hispanic Whites (Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration, 2022). In 2021, 46.4% of Hispanic youth students reported persistent feelings of sadness or hopelessness, with Hispanic youth being 60% more likely to report feelings of poor or reduced mental health than non-Hispanic White youth (Flanagan et al., 2021; Jones et al., 2022). This comprehensive literature review explored the intricate relationship between narrative approaches and the identity development of Latinx-American adolescents. Across cultures, generational and family narratives play a crucial role in shaping personal narratives, helping make meaning of experiences and fostering a sense of belonging (Allen, 2021; McAdams & McLean, 2013). Grounded in the rich tapestry of adolescent developmental theories, this literature analysis investigated the role of personal and intergenerational narratives and culture in shaping the identity of Latinx-American youth. Best practices for therapists working with this population are discussed, highlighting the importance of cultural humility and tailoring interventions to the unique needs of Latinx adolescents. This study concludes by synthesizing findings, discussing clinical implications, and proposing directions for future research that reflect systemic complexity consistent with APA Guidelines for Multicultural Competence.
