Emerging research on acculturation has yielded some results describing its ability to buffer against the adverse effects of discrimination. Less is known about this process in Black immigrants to the U.S., and their subsequent generations. The current study examined if the type of acculturation strategy in Black, U.S. born second-generation immigrants, impacts the amount of self-reported experiences of discrimination based on one's race. It is hypothesized that high enculturation and high acculturation levels; that is, strong identification with one's culture of origin and with mainstream African American culture as determined by an "integrationist" designation on the Measurement of Acculturation Strategies for People of African Descent (MASPAD), will result in a lower number of reported experiences of discrimination, as determined by scores on the Everyday Discrimination Scale (EDS). Results did not reveal a significant effect of acculturation strategy on scores on the Everyday Discrimination Scale. While results were insignificant, results revealed the highest mean scores of discrimination in the traditionalist group, and the lowest mean scores in the assimilationist group.
