This thesis is concerned with nineteenth-century representations of working relationships between humans and animals. More specifically, I examine literary and artistic depictions of work among peasants and domestic animals in the French countryside as well as workers and animals in slaughterhouses in the city. In this time period, humanistic ideologies dominated and new developments in the science and scientific experimentation lauded vision and sight as the one true way to gain knowledge and access truth. This analysis focuses on the ways these authors and artists challenge patriarchal and anthropocentric discourses by depicting relationships rooted in attention, care, and collaboration and emphasize touch and as a way of knowing. It also assesses the wide-ranging consequences of violent relationships. Examining these very different dynamics alongside one another reveals larger implications our relationships with animals have on both an individual and a communal level. As such, it can offer a fuller understanding of the significance of these works through engagement with Animal Studies, Feminist theories, and Ecocriticism. In the first two chapters, I analyze George Sand's La Petite Fadette and a number of paintings from Jean-Francois Millet and Rosa Bonheur. In these works, which span from roughly 1840-1865, the artists depict and celebrate embodied knowledge and corporeal collaboration with the natural world, especially in agricultural settings. In so doing, they show the importance of cultivating kinship with animals and the earth. In the third chapter, I examine Eugene Sue's Les Mysteres de Paris, specifically the character of Le Chourineur who spent his early adolescence working in a slaughterhouse killing horses. Le Chourineur exhibits a traumatic response which is evident in his emotional and physical reactions and the enduring effects these experiences have throughout his life. Through analyzing a variety of relationships between humans and animals in nineteenth-century France, especially in the context of work, this project intends to counter the dominant narrative of the nineteenth century and to offer a lens through which we can examine our present day situation regarding human and nonhuman kinship.
