The peer-focused nature of adolescence, combined with the ease of online communication, make adolescents prime targets for social media use. Part of social media use is self-disclosure, which can involve sharing general information about oneself or more intimate information, such as disclosures about mental health. Past researchers examining motivations for self-disclosure on social media revealed that self-disclosures create and maintain relationships, facilitate self-expression, and gain social validation, among other benefits. However, intimate self-disclosures about mental health inherently include the risk of stigma. For some, these self-disclosures address stigma and normalize mental health experiences, while others may utilize social media to spread stigmatizing attitudes. My purpose was to investigate the relationships between adolescent social media use, their level of self-disclosure over social media, and the influence of stigma. More specifically, I examined adolescents' reasons for posting publicly about their mental health on social media and how their level of general self-disclosure related to intimate self-disclosure using a sample of college students at a private, urban Midwestern university. I collected participant demographic variables and their history of therapy, diagnosis, and family history of mental health. Participants answered open-ended questions about reasons for posting or not posting on social media about mental health, and I coded these responses according to a previously published list of motivations for self-disclosure (Bazarova & Choi, 2014; Berry et al., 2017). Participants completed measures to assess general level of self-disclosure and stigmatizing attitudes toward mental illness. I analyzed the data using frequency distributions and t-tests as appropriate.
