For centuries interiors have been gendered; Juliet Kinchin's Nineteenth-Century Essays on the "masculine and Feminine room" explains the 19th century home is divided by male and female. Male rooms of a home are reserved for the private sectors such as the office and bedroom, while female spaces are for entertaining and gathering such as the kitchen and dining rooms. Subconsciously or not, masculine and feminine design is a part of everyday life. The gendered stereotype of boys' rooms being blue, and girls' rooms pink, has been a part of society for years. As a result at a young age we are put into this box of what to wear, like, and act but not everyone fits the common binary we have been conditioned to follow. Though Gender fluidity is a new concept, trans and nonbinary people have been around as long as the rest of us, and seen in many different cultures around the world. Gender theorist Kat Bornstein states in her book, Gender Outlaw," The Culture may not be simply creating roles for naturally-gendered people, the culture may, in fact, be creating the gendered people. In other words, the culture may be creating gender." As gender non conforming folk continue to challenge what it means to be a man or woman, what will it mean for the future of design? De-gendered Design is a thesis based on the interior environment that deconstructs gender stereotypes and the confines of the gender binary. The environment will neither be masc or fem but embodies both or neutralizes them, creating a space of fluidity. By using a bathhouse as the premise of the study, an often gendered space with great historic context dating back centuries, will allow an explorative response into what a degendered interior will look like. The historic site of New York's Ansonia Hotel basement, historically known as a gay bathhouse for men, will serve as the case study. The Ansonia's beaux-arts architecture will provide the constraints of designing around historic preservation while still creating a space that can serve as a future case study for gender inclusive design. The degendered interior will use color, material, and lighting to transform Ansonia's once gay baths to a space of gender fluidity.
