The dark tourism industry is a relatively new concept in the tourism space. Since 1996 when it was initially coined by Lennon and Foley, there have been several studies into aspects of dark tourism, in an attempt to further define it. Despite this, the concept of dark tourism is still relatively new, with comparably little research that has been done about it. This includes some lack of discussion on the ethics of dark tourism and the way that sites choose to discuss the memory of those involved with the reason that these sites draw in tourists year after year. The constructed narratives of Dark tourism sites are cause for concern due to how they warp the way that historical events and their victims are perceived. This paper discusses three sites that have become major tourist attractions due to their affiliation with macabre parts of history. These sites include; Salem, Massachusetts, The Eastern State Penitentiary in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, and the Lizzie Borden House Bed, and Breakfast in Fall River, Massachusetts. While there are distinct differences in the horrors that took place between these three destinations, as well as how each operates as a historical entity that has become places that welcome visitors; they are connected in that they are dark tourism destinations with ghost stories that have taken on a life of their own, and continue to be one of the reasons as to why so many people visit; something that is exacerbated leading up to and including October when Halloween and haunted marketing lead to increased numbers of visitors every year. This paper looks at each of these sites, discusses their macabre history, and how they have since become popular tourist attractions. As well as how they choose to discuss the tragedies in their presentation to the public, the public's desire for the authentic, and how fictionalized narratives can sometimes play into how these histories are remembered and what they are being remembered for. This is done with a combination of journalistic and scholarly sources as well as websites for each of the institutions and related sites. Also included are episodes of television that feature the ghost stories of these places as well; using the different mediums to get a better understanding of how the histories are being presented and how these histories can be exploited.
