Earlier research on gentrification and family displacement within urban settings focused on the physical relocation of residents and community transformations rooted in finance and infrastructure. Although these studies provided considerable information about the physical, economic, and logistic influence of gentrification, there remained a paucity of empirical findings regarding the psychosocial well-being of displaced urban residents, particularly African Americans and other people of color. This research examined gentrification-induced displacement on the psychosocial well-being of African Americans through the critical theory (CT) framework. A multi-item survey was administered to a large sample (N = 3,055) of adult residents from seven major metropolitan areas across the United States, including Baltimore, Brooklyn, Los Angeles, New Orleans, Oakland, Saint Louis, and Washington, D.C. The survey measured the background characteristics of respondents, as well as perceptions of the social and psychological challenges of gentrification-induced displacement. Results from statistical analysis of composite scores generated from the survey's embedded "psychosocial well-being" scale revealed significant differences among respondents. Specifically, scale scores differed among respondents based on perceptions of financial and political factors causing housing displacement. Also, comparisons of scale scores based on marital status and age levels produced statistically significant differences. Emergent from the findings of this current investigation and earlier studies is the need for an innovative approach to governing that stems displacement of families and dismantling of traditional urban communities-based gentrification. A proposed Community Stabilization and Enhancement (COSE) Model was developed, which consists of key elements that can improve urban environments and the emotional well-being of residents, particularly African Americans.
