New York City's Midtown Garment District has played an important role in the city's economic and cultural development. Although manufacturing in the District has been in danger of disappearing for several decades, an active core of garment-related businesses remains. Through historic background research, zoning and policy analysis, and first hand interviews with Garment District stakeholders, this thesis examines how the District and its sense of place have changed over time. It argues that the District's historic legacy as a center of garment manufacturing and creative production should be a part of any strategy for planning its future.
