Access to public restrooms should be a human right. However, this amenity has become increasingly contested with changing gender norms in society. Public restroom design requires careful consideration of accessibility, privacy, safety, and of course inclusivity. As such, this thesis set two goals: to create a tool designers can use to engage end-users on genderless restroom design, and to educate the public on genderless restroom design options and why these options matter. The growing recognition of gender fluidity and non-binary identities has inspired the need for more inclusive restroom facilities. This shift has caused a change in how designers need to approach bathrooms, with an emphasis on privacy and security. Researchers such as Joel Sanders and Susan Stryker propose that restrooms should not be gendered. Instead, they promote genderless options to create more inclusive environments for people of all gender identities and expressions. This thesis investigated to identify the reasons for the traditional binary structure in restroom designs, followed by an examination of where cultural shifts, and thus design shifts, are occurring. Case studies on gendered and genderless restrooms established a baseline for both an analysis of current solutions and a guide for future iterations of public restroom design. This study then identified strategies for gender neutral restrooms. A board game was developed as a means for designers to involve end-users in restroom design. The game acts as a site-specific decision-making tool to determine appropriate solutions for genderless bathroom design. Gameplay was tested with typical users to receive feedback on both the game prototypes and restroom design. The results of this study include game prototypes, videos of gameplay, and a thesis document containing a literature review, precedents, methods, analyses and reflections. This document will be made available electronically in the School of Architecture and Planning Library at SUNY University at Buffalo. As the general population begins to understand and increase favor for the benefits of genderless restroom design, it is likely that everyone will have access to safe and private facilities that are inclusive and welcoming. The design tool developed through this thesis can help to develop site specific facilities that are more responsive to human needs.
