Disturbance serves an important role in structuring communities and ecosystems. However, anthropogenic activity is increasing the rate and intensity of environmental change leading to both novel disturbances and increased frequency of disturbance. Understanding ecological effects of disturbance is important for prediction and management, but developing a mechanistic understanding is often challenging due to the presence of both direct and indirect pathways. Here, we explore the ecological effects of two important aquatic disturbances affecting water quality: sediment releases and harmful cyanobacterial blooms. My goal is to understand mechanistic links between water quality impairment and aquatic community response.First, we investigate both direct and indirect effects of sediment on habitat and fishes by exploring the relationship between dam operations and downstream sediment dynamics in the context of riverine fisheries management. We found sediment releases directly affect the proportion of fine sediment within spawning habitat and indirectly affect hyporheic dissolved oxygen levels. Additionally, we found cumulative effects of sediment deposition and spawning habitat degradation may persist into the development period of critical life stages. Second, we employ a meta-analytical approach to evaluate the relationship between suspended sediment exposure and fish biological response across varying life stages and taxonomic groups of fishes. We found greater severity of effect is correlated with larger suspended sediment particle size, warmer water temperature, and decreased levels of water dissolved oxygen. Further, we demonstrate approaches to conservatively predict biological impacts of suspended sediment exposure on fish and discuss limitations of empirical equations employable by natural resource managers. Third, we evaluate how harmful cyanobacterial blooms affect ecosystem functioning by investigating changes in zooplankton communities and quantifying associated underlying physicochemical factors. We establish a baseline understanding of zooplankton spatiotemporal dynamics in Wyoming reservoirs and demonstrate zooplankton community composition and biomass differ among reservoirs and years, with inconsistent patterns in dominant group. We found zooplankton response to harmful cyanobacterial blooms varied by taxonomic and trophic groups with minimal but detectable shifts in zooplankton community composition after bloom onset. Combined, these findings help us to better quantify and predict the effects of water quality disturbances on ecological patterns, evaluate variable sensitivity among taxa groups, and build on existing knowledge of how environmental perturbations influence biotic communities. The results of this research allow ecologists to better assess effective ways to manage and mitigate the effects of environmental disturbance in aquatic ecosystems.
