Not all sources of information for morphogenesis have yet to be identified, but it is crucial to do so in order to be able to innovate new therapies and prevent defects from forming. This dissertation points to the ability of lateral influences, specifically for collectives of conspecifics, to influence morphogenesis. Chapter 2 reviews the myriad of sources for which cells and organisms can receive information from outside the genome. Next, in chapter 3, I show that organisms are physiologically robust and can adapt to novel challenges in order to solve problematic situations. Specifically, I show that Dugesia japonica have a level of adaptive plasticity that allows them to survive in the face of a novel, physiological perturbation. After establishing that there are extra-genomic cues and illustrating the responsive versatility that exists when faced with unprecedented stressors, I introduce a novel mode of protection from morphogenetic defects in Xenopus laevis: collective conspecifics (chapter 4). By existing in a group, in which larger is better, there is a shielding effect against teratogens that increases survival and lowers rates of defect. Chapter 5 of this dissertation will investigate morphogenetic disorders through the lens of active inference. Here, computational modeling offers a new perspective on cellular collectives, computational modeling, and morphological abnormalities. A common thread between all the chapters is morphogenesis can be influenced by the capacity of an organism to integrate a wide range of informational inputs. This dissertation focuses on and introduces some of these informational inputs, specifically the profound contribution of collective behaviors.
