Functional traits such as morphology and diet can help determine niche width and diversification. To adequately assess organismal responses to environmental conditions, it is important to integrate intraspecific and interspecific trait variation at multiple ecological scales. Freshwater mussels, a diverse group encompassing ~360 North American Unionidae species, form dense aggregations in rivers and possess limited dispersal capabilities, making them excellent organisms for testing ecological hypotheses. This study investigates both intra- and interspecific functional trait variation and niche partitioning in freshwater mussels, spanning individual to community levels across a broad region of the southeastern United States. First, using innovative three-dimensional (3D) scanning techniques and morphometric analyses, I quantified intraspecific morphological variation in freshwater mussel populations uncovering significant correlations between environmental predictors and morphology in four long-lived species, enhancing our understanding of the mechanisms driving morphological adaptations. Secondly, I refined an existing shell morphological classification system by combining size, shape, and sculpture data from a substantial dataset representing 64 species of freshwater mussels across North America. This classification system revealed a robust relationship between functional morphology and environmental parameters, underlining the predictive value of morphological traits in understanding species distributions and community assembly mechanisms. Lastly, I evaluated functional trait variation along a biotic gradient by analyzing the relationship between species richness and trophic niche area for 25 mussel species using stable isotope analysis of soft tissue. The data indicated that as species richness increased, mean species isotopic niche decreased, suggesting increased niche specialization as a mechanism enabling coexistence in species-rich communities. Additionally, species-rich communities were found to utilize a broader range of resources suggesting mussel assemblages are not species saturated. Collectively, these findings support the niche-packing hypothesis by illustrating the importance of niche partitioning within a species-rich guild of aquatic animals. These findings demonstrate the pivotal interplay between the environment and niche space, ultimately enhancing our understanding of how organisms respond and adapt to environmental factors, with significant implications for conservation practices.
