Background and Significance. Hypertension (HTN) is a serious medical condition that significantly increases the risk for diseases of the heart, brain, and kidneys as well as other comorbidities (Whelton et al., 2018). The NHANES survey period 2017-2018 showed that, among non-Hispanic Black adults (57.1%), the prevalence of HTN was higher than among non-Hispanic White (43.6%) or Hispanic (43.7%) adults (Ostchega et al., 2020). For many years, the pillars of hypertension management have been antihypertension medications along with lifestyle changes such as low-sodium-low cholesterol diet, increase in physical activity, smoking cessation, limited caffeine consumption, and weight management (Oliveros et al., 2020; Whelton et al., 2018). Some complementary ways to help reduce and control HTN are reducing stress through positive religious and spiritual coping, coaching, yoga, listening to relaxing music, and meditating (including transcendental meditation and mindfulness meditation). Local Problem. There is a continuing need, within two faith communities in South Los Angeles, to find approaches that are trusted and culturally sensitive to assist African American adults with preventing and managing HTN (Brand, 2017). Methods. Project participants were a convenience sample of 32 African American adults aged 21 years and older with hypertension defined as blood pressure equal to or greater than 130/80 mm/Hg. This project was faith-based and used a pretest-posttest design with one group. Blood pressure measurements were obtained pre-intervention, during the intervention, and post-intervention. The Hypertension Knowledge Test was used to measure participant knowledge, and the Mindfulness Attention Awareness Scale-State was used to measure mindfulness pre- and post-intervention. Interventions. Participants attended 11 weekly education sessions that utilized the With Every Heartbeat Is Life program. They also completed 15 minutes of mindfulness meditation with scripture and music daily. Results. The Intellectus Statistics package was used to analyze data. Descriptive analysis was used to describe the demographic characteristics of the project participants (n = 19). There was a statistically significant decrease in systolic and diastolic blood pressures. There was a statistically significant increase in overall hypertension knowledge and mindfulness. Conclusions. The results suggest that, among African American adults with hypertension, a simple intervention bundle of hypertension education and mindfulness meditation with scripture and music is feasible and effective to assist with management of HTN.
