With over 90% of D/deaf and H/hard of H/hearing (DHH) children born to hearing parents, delayed access to language is unfortunately a frequent occurrence within this population. Additional research has also shown that rates of depression, as well as physical and emotional abuse are all elevated within the DHH demographic group, compared to the overall U.S. national population. This study aimed to explore the relationship between delayed access to language, levels of depression, and physical and emotional abuse within the D/deaf and H/hard of H/hearing community (DHH). Eighty-five participants were recruited through social media and were administered a series of questionnaires that explored the age at which they were first exposed to sign language, levels of current depressive symptoms, and past levels of emotional and physical abuse they experienced as a child. The age at which an individual was exposed to sign language was not found to be a significant predictor of levels of depressive symptoms or past experiences of emotional or physical abuse. However, a significant positive correlation was found between retroactively reported emotional abuse as a child and depressive symptoms in adulthood, p < .001. This may suggest that early exposure to negative emotional exchanges can be internalized and result in higher levels of depressive symptoms for DHH individuals.Additional research is needed to effectively measure the severity of delayed access to language and the impacts that it may have on the mental health of DHH individuals.
