Better understanding of the ecosystems under climate change and anthropogenic disturbance requires long-term monitoring of the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum and the investigation of the interactions among its components, especially regarding carbon and water cycling. The carbon and water cycles are strongly coupled mainly due to the concurring transpiration of water and uptake of CO2 by stomata. The purpose of this dissertation is to advance our understanding of soil-plant-atmosphere-human interactions by exploring the mechanisms that drive the change of important properties and processes relevant to carbon and water cycling.Based on the U.S. National Ecological Observatory Network (NEON) which allows for continental-scale research across an eco-climatic gradient, I study the 30-year soil organic carbon (SOC) change under different land-use change scenarios in Chapter 2 to quantify the pattern of SOC change and identify the edaphic and environmental controlling factors; the leaf functional traits in response to environmental gradients in Chapter 3 to investigate the soil-plant interactions focusing on the physiological strategies; and the control of soil water over evapotranspiration (ET) partitioning in Chapter 4 to predict the water cycling in the soil-plant-atmosphere continuum. The first two chapters use empirical methods to combine satellite and airborne remote sensing with ground-truth sampling, while the last chapter leverages land surface modeling and eddy-covariance data in an integrated manner.Differences in biophysical conditions significantly influence the direction and/or magnitude of the change in those important properties and processes across the eco-climatic gradient. These biophysical conditions are deeply rooted in the internal characteristics of each subject. For example, the results of Chapter 2 suggest that the carbon sequestration potential of a soil is constrained by the difference of the current SOC content and the saturated SOC content characterized by its cation exchange capacity. In Chapter 3, tree species with different plant hydraulic strategies resulted from different morphologies represent opposing sensitivity of critical physiological processes to environmental gradients. In Chapter 4, the ET moisture regime determines the role of soil water in terms of ET partitioning and affects the performance of different soil water equations consequently.
