In these three essays, I explore different empirical strategies to understand the finan- cial decision-making of households and the impact of new technology on households in equilibrium. In the first essay, "Credit Cards and Retail Firms: Historical Evidence from the United States," I use a historical natural experiment to explore the impact of new bank-issued credit card technology on retail firms across the United States. In the second essay, "How do Borrowers Respond to a Debt Moratorium? Experimental Evidence from India," Martin Kanz, Stefano Fiorin and I collaborate with a fintech consumer lender in India to randomly assign borrowers to debt forbearance offers to measure whether what kinds of belief updating and behavioral effects take place when borrowers are offered more time to pay their loans during an economic downturn (in this case, COVID-19). In the third essay, "Benefits and Challenges in Loan Restruc- turing: a Case Study of Digital Consumer Loans," I analyze loan-level data from a fintech lender India to show that in a market where the benefits to loan restructuring are very high due to tight liquidity constraints and deadweight loss of debt enforce- ment, practical challenges such as borrower non-contactability persist which limit the reach of such programs in practice.
