The study was undertaken with the objective of assessing the stress and coping experienced by families of autistic children. In addition, the systemic functioning of these families and their maternal family satisfaction was evaluated according to the Olson's Circumplex Model of Family and Marital Systems. Levels of stress, coping, and maternal family satisfaction were compared between a group of families of autistic children falling in the balanced range of the Circumplex Model and a group of families of autistic children falling into the unbalanced range. Forty mothers of male autistic children between the ages of four and 19 were administered the Questionnaire on Resources and Stress-Short Form, Coping Health Inventory for Parents, Family Adaptability and Cohesion Evaluation Scales, and the Family Satisfaction Scale. Mothers were also interviewed to provide detailed family demographic and background information. The results indicated that the level of stress experienced by families of autistic children does not significantly differ from that of families with children possessing other developmental disabilities. In addition, the level of coping reported by families of autistic children does not significantly differ from that of families with other chronically ill/disabled children. Families raising an autistic child do not significantly differ from families raising a nonproblematic child relative to their frequency of distribution in the unbalanced or unhealthy ranges of Olson's Circumplex Model of Family Functioning. A significantly greater percentage of these families fall within the "Chaotic" range of family adaptability than do families of nonproblematic children. Level of family satisfaction does not significantly differ between mothers of autistic children and mothers of children with no apparent problems. Lastly, no significant differences exist between families of autistic children falling into the balanced range of the Circumplex Model and families of autistic children falling into the unbalanced range, relative to their levels of stress, coping, and maternal family satisfaction. Families falling into the balanced range possess a significantly greater level of maternal satisfaction with their families' level of cohesiveness than do families falling into the unbalanced range of the Circumplex Model.
