Research Problem DefinitionThis thesis explores the potential of advanced technologies, particularly 3D printing and interactive tangible user interfaces (ITUI), in revolutionizing museum experiences for blind and partially sighted (BPS) visitors. By leveraging these advancements, we aim to create more inclusive and engaging environments that empower BPS individuals to fully participate in the cultural richness museums offer.Traditional museum exhibitions, heavily reliant on visual displays, pose significant barriers for BPS visitors. Glass cases housing artifacts and objects remain strictly off-limits to touch, hindering tactile interaction, a crucial element for meaningful exploration. However, Recent technological developments in 3D scanning and printing offer new and promising avenues for improving accessibility. This is achieved by creating 3D digital models of exhibits and printing them into physical objects using various kinds of plastic materials on a 3D printer. These innovative techniques hold the potential to craft interactive and immersive experiences that go beyond the visual, fostering a more inclusive and enriching environment for all visitors.During the past decade, various projects demonstrated creative uses of novel technologies to improve BPS accessibility. These projects range from navigation aids within museums, to accessible reproductions of paintings and the creation of 3D printed replicas of museum collections. These initiatives collectively contribute to the ongoing effort towards creating more inclusive museums.Despite these advancements, BPS visitor participation remains limited due to multiple barriers they often experience and the lack of assistive technologies to promote access. The full potential of 3D printers, 3D scanners, and interactive systems in enhancing accessibility remains largely untapped.Furthermore, while extensive literature exists on accessible museum buildings, planning, and content, a critical gap remains in the development of standardized guidelines for integrating new technologies into exhibits for optimal accessibility. This lack of guidance hinders museum staff from implementing more accessible exhibitions.Theoretical Framework SummaryIn response to this gap, this research project, conducted in collaboration with the University of Haifa's Informatics Systems and Occupational Therapy Departments, aimed to enhance accessibility for BPS visitors at the Hecht Museum. Utilizing User-Centered Design (UCD) methodologies, we developed and evaluated four interactive concept prototypes with two blind volunteers. This ensured the systems were tailored to user needs and tasks, minimizing potential negative experiences. The concepts were presented through 3D printed replicas, each with its own narrated description.Building upon these initial prototypes, three functional ITUIs developed and evaluated in a realistic setting with 30 BPS participants. Usability tests and satisfaction questionnaires assessed user experience across various aspects, including overall satisfaction, sense of control, and level of interest and enjoyment.
