This dissertation investigates how Russian-speaking Spätaussiedler, ethnic Germans from the former Soviet Union, construct and navigate their identities within contemporary Germany. Despite legal recognition as German citizens, Spätaussiedler often experience cultural marginalization, especially in the context of rising geopolitical tensions and public scrutiny following Russia's invasion of Ukraine. Through 51 qualitative interviews conducted in Freiburg and Dresden, this ethnographic study examines how identity is reshaped in response to national discourse, local political climates, and everyday social interactions. The analysis draws from interdisciplinary frameworks in migration studies, sociolinguistics, and identity theory to reveal that identity among Spätaussiedler is fluid, negotiated, and deeply context specific. Participants described tensions between inherited cultural affiliations and the need to conform to dominant societal norms. Younger generations, particularly those raised or educated in Germany, tended to express more hybrid or flexible identities, while older individuals often retained stronger attachments to Russian language and cultural practices. However, the Russian language itself has become politicized, prompting many to limit its use in public to mitigate suspicion or discomfort. The comparative dimension of this study highlights how regional political culture shapes migrant experiences. In liberal Freiburg, participants reported pressure to distance themselves from Russian identity, while Dresden, despite its conservative reputation, offered more social acceptance of cultural difference, particularly among Russian-speaking communities. Ultimately, the study argues that belonging for Spätaussiedler is not guaranteed by citizenship alone. It is continuously negotiated in response to external expectations, geopolitical events, and internal community dynamics. This research offers new insights into the entanglement of migration, identity, and politics in a polarized Europe.
