As an island, Taiwan relies heavily on the ocean and coastline for its history, culture, economy, natural environment, and geographic positioning. The ocean is important for biodiversity, fishing, and Taiwan's role as a maritime hub in the Asia-Pacific. However, due to historical development and political factors, the Taiwanese people have become disconnected from the sea. This disconnection has led to the decline of traditional fisheries and the downfall of maritime culture, as well as a lack of ocean education, particularly for younger generations. As writer Ming-yi Hao said, "Although the ocean surrounds us, we have never had ocean education-only fear of the sea. Thus, we do not face the ocean but turn our backs on it. When we do have to confront the ocean, it often results in destructive actions."Located at Fugui Fishing Port in northern Taiwan, the site offers a unique opportunity to balance the needs of traditional fisheries with urban accessibility. By reimagining this space for local fishermen and the fisheries industry, the design not only serves the local community but also reconnects urban populations with the sea. Its proximity to Taipei and nearby tourist destinations enhances its appeal, attracting families, tourists, and educational groups seeking authentic coastal experiences.Spatial strategies will focus on creating dynamic indoor-outdoor spaces, blurring the boundaries between land and sea, and inviting exploration. For example, tidal platforms and shared walking paths will offer a seamless connection between the natural world and built environments. Structures extending into the sea will allow users to experience the ebb and flow of seawater, engaging the senses and fostering a direct connection with the ocean. The interplay of water and space becomes central, inviting users to engage with the environment in multi-sensory ways. These spaces will not only allow visitors to witness the natural rhythm of the ocean but also encourage people to spend time in nature, helping to restore a long-lost relationship with the sea.To further engage with younger generations and address generational trauma, the design incorporates educational and interactive activities aimed at fostering a love and understanding of the ocean. Hands-on experiences like marine activities, storytelling workshops, and child-friendly environmental education programs will help young people overcome fear and learn to appreciate the sea as part of their identity. This immersive approach is designed to build a deeper emotional connection with the ocean and promote sustainable attitudes toward marine conservation. In addition, the integration of outdoor fish markets, night markets, and eco-tourism will create a new programmatic interaction with coastal spaces, allowing both locals and visitors to engage with maritime culture and practices in an eco-friendly way. Recycled marine materials such as oyster-shell concrete and bio-plastics will be used to emphasize the sustainable relationship between the built environment and the ocean.Eventually, this project aims to break both the physical and psychological boundaries that have separated the people of Taiwan from the ocean, strengthening their sense of identity and fostering a deeper, more intimate relationship with the sea. By focusing on sustainable practices and integrating educational elements, this design redefines the connection between the people and their coastal environment, ensuring that future generations can forge a lasting bond with the ocean.
