The American South has long held a controversial place in the American literary and cultural imagination: not only a host of traumatic histories and national shame but also a site of fierce attachments and determined political struggle. Within such a matrix, the South is as much a national fiction as it is a geographic entity. This dissertation contends that such a fiction is often upheld through the complex, and often contradictory, feelings that the South spurs both within and without the region. While the predominance of "nostalgia" as a keyword in southern studies shows that scholars in this field have long been interested in studying the region through an emotional lens, this over-investment in nostalgia-along with its accompanying affects of guilt, rage, and shame-has stalled the relationship between southern and affect studies. The exclusive focus on such feelings privileges a white emotional paradigm, ignoring the lived experiences of the diverse communities in the region that persist despite the social and ecological catastrophes of the South. To understand fully the ongoing significance of the South as a vital site of struggle, we must turn to the work of twentieth and twenty-first century authors and theorists-such as William Faulkner, Jean Toomer, bell hooks, Honoreé Fanonne Jeffers, and Jesmyn Ward-who remap the South as a place of dynamic and often paradoxical emotions. This dissertation explores the ways that these southern feelings are intertwined with matters of ecology and historiography, underscoring the myriad inflections of emotion on the ways that the South is represented, redefined, and remembered. This play between feeling, ecocriticism, and history allows for the mapping of "affective geographies" across works that are both canonical and contemporary, carving out critical space for considering the vast network of attachments to southern land, history, and identity that inform the work of resistance and collectivity that has taken root in the South.
