"This year marks the twentieth anniversary of the 2004 Indian Ocean earthquake and tsunami. On 26 December 2004, a major earthquake struck with its epicentre off the west coast of northern Sumatra, Indonesia. A tsunami with waves up to 30 metres high subsequently wreaked havoc on coastal communities around the Indian Ocean. The impact of the tsunami was a wakeup call to the world to pay greater attention to disasters, review and reform disaster management and emergency response, and improve cooperation in times of crises. Over the past two decades, the global humanitarian system has undergone significant developments in response to lessons learned from responding to the Indian Ocean tsunami, the exigencies stemming from the increasing scale, frequency, and complexity of disasters, as well as changing political contexts. This edited collection brings together scholars and practitioners with deep insights and experience from the inside on the ways in which disaster management has evolved both at the international level and in Southeast Asia"--
