This project examines the intersection of colonialism and theology in shaping the concept of humanitarian intervention during the 16th and 17th centuries. My research seeks to answer the question: how were justifications for intervention and indigenous rights simultaneously formulated during the early modern period? By analyzing the political thought of Francisco de Vitoria, Hugo Grotius, and Thomas Hobbes-particularly their discussions on cannibalism and human sacrifice in the "New World"-I highlight the inherent ambivalence within the notion of humanitarian intervention.
