Thesis (Ph.D.)--Regent University, 2024.
This study examines the writings of Saint Clare of Assisi, specifically the four letters written to Agnes of Prague and the Form of Life, through close reading to capture Clare's voice as a communicator. Using Armstrong's (2006) English translations of the primary artifacts in The Lady -Clare of Assisi Early Documents, the researcher takes an inductive and historical-critical approach to understand how Clare communicates the privilege of poverty in forming Christian identity. This study applies Brummett's (2010) framework for close reading analysis. Elements observed include form consisting of the narrative, coherence and sequence, tension and resolution, alignment and opposition persona/genre followed by transformations in text, and argumentation and ideology. The researcher concludes that combined elements create an image of communication identity through the privilege of poverty. The results of this study indicate that through the form, transformations in text, and argumentation and ideology, Clare's rhetorical constructions enable the reader to imagine a life of beauty, hope, and light through the poverty of Christ rather than hopelessness and darkness associated with socio-economic poverty. Clare builds tension throughout the texts, describing the conflict and consequences of living a life based on earthly principles versus a life built on spirituality focused on Christ. She resolves the tension by illustrating that those who choose to live Christ-centered lives become one with Him, gaining eternal life. The researcher ultimately locates a connection to the field of communication through the communication theory of identification in Clare's work (Hecht & Phillips, 2021).
