Single Comb White Leghorn (SCWL) chicks were beak-trimmed 2 mm at 7 d and retrimmed at 18 wk of age by removing half of the remaining beak in Experiment 1. The birds were housed at hens:nipple ratios (HPN) of 3.5:1, 7:1, 14:1 and 10:1. The HPNs had no significant effect on age at sexual maturity, hen-housed egg production, mortality, average egg weight, and body weight gain. Hens on HPNs of 3.5:1 and 7:1 consumed more feed per day, consumed more water and had poorer feed conversion and feed efficiency than those on HPNs of 10:1 and 14:1. Four strains of SCWL chicks (Babcock 300, DeKalb XL, Hyline W-36, and Shaver 288) were used in Experiment 2. The Babcock strain matured earlier than did the other strains. The Babcock, DeKalb and Hyline strains had a higher rate of lay than the Shaver strain. The Hyline strain had a higher mortality than the other strains. The Shaver strain consumed more feed, produced the heaviest eggs, and gained the most weight. The Hyline strain consumed more water than the other strains. In Experiment 3, two strains of SCWL chicks, the DeKalb XL (D) and Hyline W-36 (H), were either precision beak-trimmed (BT) 2 mm at 7 d of age or BT by removing half of the beak with an inside slant cut at 12 wk of age. The birds precision BT consumed more feed than those that were BT with the inside slant method. In the laying phase, no significant differences were found for feed conversion, feed efficiency, weight gain and water consumption for strain, method of BT and protein level. Neither strain nor crude protein level had a significant effect on age at sexual maturity. But birds precision BT matured earlier, consumed more feed, and laid more eggs than those BT with the inside slant. The Hyline strain had a higher rate of production than the DeKalb strain. The DeKalb strain had more mortality, laid heavier eggs, and gained more weight than the Hyline strain. No significant differences for method of BT or crude protein level in the diet were observed for mortality. There were no significant differences for strain or protein level for feed consumption. No significant differences were observed for average egg weight for method of BT or crude protein level. (Abstract shortened with permission of author.).
