The study investigated the meaning O.K. (Our Kids) Program graduates ascribe to the experience of becoming successful. The study also sought to understand, from those participants who self-identified as possessing social and achievement deficits prior to the program, the transitional process toward pro-social lifestyles and life satisfaction from socially dysfunctional lifestyles and achievement deficits. The objective of the study was to understand the meaning Black males ascribe to membership in the O.K. Program and the experience of maturation toward responsible adulthood. The phenomenological research design was suited to unearthing the essence, acquiring pre-reflective descriptions, and constructing a composite structural description of the experience of participating in the O.K. Program. Using a phenomenological research design, data were collected via semi-structured interviews with O.K. Program graduates. The data comprises the individual and collective explication of their shared and lived experience as graduates of the program. The study is based on a convenience sample of 13 O.K. Program Alumni, now ages 21-33 years, some of whom self-reported past poor self-efficacy and poor academic performance and/or who now attribute their current life-satisfaction to their participation in the O.K. Program. The phenomenological data were analyzed using a synthesis of methods by Moustakas, Van Kaam, and Stevick-Colaizzi-Keen. Accountability, black male leadership, enlightenment, and cultural identity emerged as dominate themes. The essence of participating in the O.K. Program is accountability. Implications of the findings were discussed.
