The knowledge explosion has provided more than enough material for social studies teachers to cover in the curricula. Add the Standards movement to the required curricula and now social studies teachers need to develop new ways of teaching everything students need to know about social studies to pass the state-wide standardized tests. What is it exactly that students need to know? Should social studies teachers emphasize learning skills over content coverage? What would social studies learning and instruction be like if students had the opportunity to apply their skills to learn content and concepts through in-depth research of case studies? The purpose of my study is to design, implement, and examine a case study-based curriculum design approach to teaching the social studies in my Grade 7 World Geography classroom in order to better understand the experiences of the teacher and students when implementing this type of instructional approach. According to the Third International Mathematics and Science Study (TIMMS), "The American curriculum is an inch deep and a mile wide" (TIMMS, 1996). Is it better to know a little something about many subjects, or is it better to know more about fewer subjects? In Stirring the Head, Heart, and Soul: Redefining the Curriculum and Instruction, H. Lynn Erickson explains that "the current wisdom is less is more" (Erickson, 2001, p. 18).
