Thesis (D.M.A.)--Shenandoah University, 2024.
The genre of Chinese art song encompasses a wide variety of unique repertoire that reflects an equally wide range of influences. A number of Chinese composers in the early twentieth century studied in Western countries before returning to China and composing a significant number of Chinese art songs while making prominent use of Western compositional techniques. Among these pioneering composers, Tzu Huang's (1904-1938) contributions to the repertoire of Chinese art song stands out as especially prominent. However, due to the difficulties many non- native singers may encounter when preparing performances of Chinese art song, much of this repertoire remains seldom performed in the United States. A significant part of this programming divide stems from the relative lack of English-language introductory materials or guides for performance practice available to non-native singers approaching this vast repertoire. This project aims to provide non-native singers with a guide for performing eleven songs from a selected collection of Tzu Huang's Chinese art songs. In order to facilitate more informed, effective performances, this dissertation examines multiple angles for performers to consider in greater depth: (1) historical context, including Huang's biography and his contributions to modern Chinese music, (2) practical differences between general performance praxis for modern-era Chinese art song and Western art song, (3) performance guides with English poetic translations and International Phonetic Alphabet (IPA) transliterations for selected songs by Tzu Huang, as well as (4) key features in the text, meter, tonal center, vocal range, and related practical factors that merit additional attention from performers.
