This study compares adaptations of William Shakespeare's The Winter's Tale. It compiles different adaptations in one list, examining the factors that unite them. Because of diverse media and focus, the study establishes criteria to determine what constitutes an adaptation of The Winter's Tale. These adaptations share a common motif of nature reflecting the emotional tone of the play in relation to the children in the story. The first section catalogues the media of the different adaptations, dividing them by their medium in order to identify characteristics specific to each medium when adapting the play. The section shows how drastically the adaptations vary. To find the link, the next section goes over the plot, characters, themes and recognizable moments to identify variations from the original text in the different adaptations. Nature being used to embody the emotions of the characters surrounding the loss and restoration of children was the narrative element they all shared. To illustrate this point, the third section is an analysis of four different adaptations. The study reveals how this motif is incorporated in the various adaptations in light of different cultures and media. Isolating this motif as a signifier of a story's identity as a Winter's Tale adaptation and surveying all the different adaptations provides different research and staging opportunities.
