When Hebrew native speakers learn to read in English, especially phonics, they face two significant challenges regarding grapho-phonemic correspondence, since Hebrew and English have different phonologies and orthographies. The first challenge, therefore, is there becoming familiar with a new set of phonemes that do not exist in their native Hebrew, while the second obstacle is having to learn a completely different set of alphabets and related characteristics. Additionally, a phoneme in written Hebrew is represented by a single grapheme, whereas each phoneme in written English can be represented by a grapheme comprised of more than one letter. Moreover, in English, one letter may represent more than one sound - all conditions that do not exist in the Hebrew language.Research indicates, however, that the two languages do share certain phonological decoding skills that can be transferred between the two. For example, negative transfer of phonological information may take place between the two languages, or alternatively, positive transfer of phonemic information may take place. Negative transfer may occur when the learner's L1 phonemes have weak correspondence in the L2 language (i.e., when the L2 sounds phonologically similar to the speaker's L1). In this case, rather than internalizing these English phonemes in their phonological memory as a brand-new independent set of phonemes, Hebrew speakers are more likely to assimilate them with their closest Hebrew equivalents. As such, after words in L2 English are recognized using this type of inadequate representation, it may later be difficult for users to quickly and accurately recognize them as part of their vocabulary. On the other hand, positive transfer may occur in cases where phonemes from one language are not associative with phonemes from the other language. In this case, when learning L2 English, Hebrew speakers are likely to quickly absorb these phonemes as a brand-new set of entries in their phonological lexicon - one that will eventually support the fast and accurate processing of English words.The study aims to investigate the gap between the processing of words in the English language composed of familiar phonemes as opposed to English words composed of phonemes in the English language that do not exist in Hebrew, by analyzing the proficiency of native Hebrew speakers in naming written words and drawings in L2 English, categorizing written English words with speed and accuracy, and reading short English passages aloud. At the same time, the phonology of the stimuli will be consistently adjusted to overlap with Hebrew phonology.In relation to cross-linguistic transfer, the theoretical framework applied in this research thesis is based on the Threshold Hypothesis, the Developmental Interdependence Hypothesis, and the Linguistic Coding Differences Hypothesis. According to the Threshold Hypothesis, bilingual people must achieve a certain degree of competency in their L1 and L2 before their being bilingual starts positively influencing their cognitive functioning. Next, the Developmental Interdependence Hypothesis contends that when children are exposed to the L2, their L1 proficiency impacts their target L2. As such, significant interactions will be seen between L1 and L2 that can be exploited to support the development of L2 literacy. Finally, according to the Linguistic Coding Differences Hypothesis, L1 language capabilities serve as the foundation for L2 language acquisition - particularly reading.

520 $a כאשר דוברי עברית שפת אם לומדים לקרוא באנגלית, בעיקר תהליך החיבור שבין צלילים ל שפה הכתובה, הם מתמודדים עם שני אתגרים משמעותיים בכל הנוגע ל קשר הגרפו-פונמית: לעברית ולאנגלית יש פונולוגיות ואורתוגרפיות שונות. ברמת הפונולוגיה, קיים סט חדש של פונמות שלא קיים בעברית, ו ברמה האורתוגרפית קיים סט חדש של אלפבית עם מאפיינים חדשים. בנוסף, כל פונמה בעברית מיוצגת בשפה הכתובה על ידי גרפמה בודדת, ואילו באנגלית, פונמה יכולה להיות מיוצגת על ידי גרפמה המורכבת מיותר מאות אחת. נוסף על כך, אות אחת עשויה לייצג יותר מצליל אחד. תנאים אלו אינם קיימים בעברית.לפי העדויות הקיימות במחקר, אנגלית ועברית חולקות מגוון מיומנויות פענוח פונולוגיות שניתן להעביר בין השפות. העברה חיובית )transfer positive )של מידע פונמי בין שתי השפות, והעברה שלילית )transfer negative )של מידע פונולוגי כאשר לפונמות מהשפה הראשונה )L1 )של הלומד יש רק התאמות רופפות בשפה השנייה )L2 .)במילים אחרות, הפונמות נשמעות דומות לפונמות משפה ראשונה, אך בפועל אלו פונמות שונות. הדמיון שבין הפונמות החדשות מהשפה השנייה לפונמות שקיימות בייצוג הפונולוגי המבוסס על השפה הראשונה מחבל בתהליך הפנמת הפונמות החדשות. וכך קורה שבמקום להפנים את הפונמות החדשות של השפה האנגלית, כמערכת עצמאית חדשה לגמרי של פונמות בזיכרון הפונולוגי שלהן, דובר העברית נוטה יותר להטמיע אותן עם המקבילות העבריות הקרובות ביותר שלהן. כאשר מילים באנגלית מזוהות לראשונה באמצעות ייצוגים לא נכונים, שהתפתחו בעקבות התהליך שהוסבר לעיל, עלול בשלב מאוחר יותר להקשות על הלומדים לזהות אותן במהירות ובדייקנות כחלק מאוצר המילים שלהם. זוהי דוגמה להעברה שלילית ברמה פונולוגית המתרחשת בין שפת האם עברית לשפה החדשה שהיא האנגלית.בניגוד לכך, העברה חיובית במקרים בהם פונמות משפה אחת זהות לפונמות מהשפה השנייה. במצב זה, הלומד דובר העברית, אשר נמצא בתהליך רכישת השפה האנגלית עשוי לקלוט את הפונמות הללו במהירות כסט קיים של ערכים בלקסיקון הפונולוגי שלו, סט שיתמוך בסופו של דבר בעיבוד מהיר ומדויק של מילים באנגלית.המחקר המוצע נועד למלא את הפער בעיבוד של מילים בשפה האנגלית בין מילים באנגלית המורכבות מפונמות מוכרות ומילים באנגלית המורכבות מפונמות בשפה האנגלית שאינן קיימות בעברית. בדרך של ניתוח קפדני של דוברי עברית בקריאת מילים ושיום ציורים באנגלית, וסיווג מילים כתובות באנגלית על פי מהירות ובדיוק,המסגרת התיאורטית של המחקר משלבת מספר תיאוריות של העברה בין-לשונית, כגון, השערת הסף Hypothesis Threshold( TH ,)לפיה כל אדם דו-לשוני חייב להגיע לדרגה מסוימת של כישורים בשפת האם והשפה השנייה, לפני שיתחיל להשפיע באופן חיובי על תפקודו הקוגניטיבי. תיאוריה זו היא יסוד המחקר. בנוסף, השערת התלות ההדדית ההתפתחותית Interdependence Developmental Hypothesis( DIH ,)תיאוריה נוספת, הטוענת שכאשר ילד נחשף לשפה חדשה מיומנותו בשפת האם משפיעה על מיומנותו ברכישת השפה החדשה. לפי רעיון זה, יהיו אינטראקציות משמעותיות בין שפה ראשונה לשפה שנייה, אשר ניתן לנצל כדי לתמוך בפיתוח אוריינות בשפה השנייההשערת טוענת כי יכולות השפה הראשונה (L1 ,(משמשות כבסיס לרכישת שפה חדשה )L2 ,)במיוחד בהתפתחות רכישת קריאה בשפה שנייה. תיאוריה זו משמשת בסיס לתיאוריות עכשוויות בנושא העברה בין שפתית. בנוסף, התיאוריה מצביעה על כך שלקות שפה בשפת האם עשויה, לפחות בחלקה, להיות הגורם לקשיי למידה בשפה שניה, אפשרות שסביר להניח שתהיה מכרעת לרכישת שפה שנייה. מסגרת העיבוד המרכזית, Framework Processing Central The) CPF (שבה מיומנויות לשוניות מתבטאות בפיתוח אוריינות שפה ראשונה ומשלימה, היא גרסה עכשווית יותר של LCDH .מסגרת זו טוענת שמודעות פונמית, מהירות עיבוד ותהליכים חזותיים משותפים לקריאה ולפיתוח מיומנויות קריאה בשפות ובמערכות כתיבה.שר(, LCDH(The Linguistic Coding Differences Hypothesis הלשוני הקידוד ה.
