This study sought to understand the nature and type of early music experiences students in my school district have and the frequency at which they have these experiences. Edwin Gordon's (2013) Music Learning Theory for Newborn and Young Children explains the importance of early music experiences in children for the development of their music aptitude. Research studies with young children have shown that music instruction at ages 5 or younger results in a positive impact on music aptitude scores (Flohr, 1981; Tzu-Ching, 2010). In conjunction with this, other music education researchers have also argued the importance of informal music experiences in the home during infancy as a prerequisite to formal music instruction (Gembris, 2006; Sloboda, 1985).This study was guided by three questions: (1) What kind of musical experiences are naturally occurring in my student's home environment?; (2) What are the similarities and differences in my students' musical experience in their home?; and (3) What are the beliefs and attitudes on music learning from student musician families? One hundred thirty-eight (N = 138) parents of 4th-6th grade student musicians participated in a researcher-constructed survey designed to examine their home habits with music as well as their beliefs about the importance of music education.After collecting and analyzing responses, the data indicated that that while there does exist a history of early life music experiences the frequency of those experiences are not as regularly occurring as suggested by music researchers (Gordon, 2013; Papousek, 1996; Sloboda, 1985). Results from the survey suggests that there needs to be an increase in music experiences in the home. Education and guidance from music educators for parents of young children could improve frequency of music experiences in the home.It is recommended that elementary music educators create strong relationships with K-3 grade level students and their parents. Goals should include offering quality live music opportunities for K-3 students and parents to attend regularly as well as providing guidance and education to parents of young students on how to support and include music education in the home. These objectives should be met in hopes of increasing the frequency of music experiences that children receive in the home.
