The most pressing dilemma affecting our civilization is moving from a primarily resource-consuming economy to one that meets modern societies' chemical and energy needs by new sustainable and energy-saving technologies based on non-renewable resources. This transformation includes adopting environmentally friendly and chemically sound methods of power generation. Currently, research is being conducted to make aerogels, electrodes, and chemicals from used paper. Along these lines, research was also performed using oscillating chemical reactions as a facile, effective, and sustainable one-pot approach for generating porous carbon with superior electrochemical performance. By using an oscillating, Belousov-Zhabotinsky (B-Z) reaction, we were able to generate radicals that initiated polymerization and was later collected to undergo carbonization to form a porous carbon with traces of Ru/ RuO2. In my second project, waste paper collected in the laboratory was also carbonized to form mesoporous carbon decorated cobalt metal/oxide composites. Due to their easy synthesis, high porosity, and large surface area, carbon-based materials are suitable for electrochemical analysis. This straightforward strategy has the potential to have a significant impact. Utilizing all the resources available from paper provides an alternative to waste management, providing additional opportunities to obtain valuable materials from wastepaper and, whenever possible, adhering to the green chemistry principle.
