In the last stage of aging, the older adult community will inevitably face mental health concerns. Currently, the older adult population is expanding at an exponential rate, limiting availability in the healthcare sector. Proactive preventative mental health care is needed for older adults as they tackle the challenges of aging, and evidence points to musical engagement as a helpful and worthwhile activity to assist older adults in maintaining their wellbeing. However, there needs to be more research on the more specific details of how musical engagement affects wellbeing. The current study explored older adults' experiences of how musical engagement (listening, playing an instrument, singing, and musical therapy) influenced wellbeing. Fourteen older adults (ages 65-85) from the San Francisco Bay Area participated in this qualitative descriptive study by participating in semi-structured interviews and member-checking focus groups. The results of the thematic analysis revealed eight main themes and four subthemes concerning how music influenced Seligman's five elements of wellbeing (positive emotion, engagement, relationship, meaning, and accomplishment). Theoretical and practical implications were addressed pertaining to the need for more educational opportunities and the overall availability of musical engagement activities for the older adult community to promote wellbeing. This study contributes to the ongoing attempt to set a proactive tone in the health sector for providing musical engagement knowledge to help older adults combat the overwhelming challenges of aging. Future research in exploring musical engagement activities individually with more focus is recommended.
