As practices that emphasize self-control and effective use of aggression, martial arts have been shown to improve self-regulation, emotional regulation, assertiveness, and lead to healthier interpersonal relationships. This dissertation is a critical review of the existing psychological literature that explore internal martial arts practices and expands the literature by examining the external martial art of Muay Thai. An autoethnographic approach is utilized to incorporate the author's personal experiences of the implied lessons of Muay Thai through physiological, intrapsychic, interpersonal, spiritual lenses. This dissertation argues that the external practice of Muay Thai offers opportunities for practitioners to uncover and confront disavowed aspects of the self, identify embodied emotions, practice self-compassion through mindfulness, increase empathy for others, and transcend the experience of the self.
