The Eastern Equatorial Pacific (EEP) is symbolized by enhanced primary productivity and oxygen-depleted waters because of intensified upwelling of nutrient-rich subsurface water, making it an ideal region for investigating how biogeochemical systems respond to changing oceanographic conditions over time. This study explores organic carbon flux changes and water masses properties for the EEP over the last 25,000 years with the aid of benthic foraminifera abundance and relative contents of indicative species in the core CDH-26 from the Peru margin. High organic carbon flux and low oxygen concentration in the bottom water are established for the glacial period based on the high abundance of benthic foraminifera and the dominance of low-oxygen-tolerant species. The transition from the glacial to interglacial period is characterized by organic carbon flux maxima and a high share of the infaunal genus Bulimina and epifaunal genus Epistominella, which both indicate hypoxic environments. The interglacial period is marked by the weakened abundance of benthic foraminifera and disappearance of most of the low-oxygen-tolerant species, due to the decreased influx of organic matter to the bottom and/or advection of less aggressive intermediate-depth water masses.
