The cultural discourse on transnational corporations (TNCs) under the current neoliberal phase of capitalism tends to reify these institutions as rational and efficient structures chartered for the maximization of profit. Yet, the inherent opacity of private corporations renders the scholarly study of this form of social organization problematic. By utilizing the trove of internal documents hacked from the servers of Sony Pictures Entertainment (SPE) by the Guardians of Peace in 2014 and published by WikiLeaks in 2015, this dissertation aims is to contribute to the understanding of the modern transnational corporation by analyzing the internal discourses of an oligopolistic entertainment conglomerate. The polymorphous discourses charted in this dissertation reveal the top-heavy, inefficient, and at times dysfunctional aspects of a large, publicly traded company thus putting a spotlight on the contradictions of neoliberal capitalism as reified in the modern transnational corporation. Through the careful study of SPE's internal documents this dissertation shows the existing dialectic between the various actors involved. Specifically, the documents reveal how the firm's top executive, Michael Lynton, tried to manage the profitability pressures coming from investors by seriously considering a radical restructuring of Sony Music aimed at minimizing artist development risks and at maximizing revenues from catalogue. This risk averse posture can also be seen in regard to the vicissitudes of Pentatonix, a band who almost became a victim of its own originality. The oligopolistic, rent-seeking character of SPE comes to the fore in its lobbying efforts, in concert with other U.S. content industries, aimed at strengthening copyrights regimes worldwide and at characterizing copyright infringers as 'thieves' and 'pirates.' These efforts have fostered the growth of an industry dedicated to the policing of copyrights which, in turn, has a vested interest in exacerbating the public's perception of the issue. Yet, SPE's internal documents reveal how industry executives infringe upon the same copyrights within their private elite networks. Based on a culture of favors, these informal networks also enable well connected industry executives like Lynton to influence the admission process at elite universities and to facilitate the promotion of U.S. domestic and foreign policy objectives even when the latter constitute a potential liability for Sony's corporate image and profitability. Ultimately, the secretive state-private network revealed by SPE's internal documents involving the firm's CEO, the think tanks to which he belongs, and members of the U.S. state department may shed a light on the types of artistic artifacts and particularly the kinds of musics that are produced by modern entertainment corporations.
