Thesis (D.N.P.)--Regis College, 2023.
Within the collegiate student-athlete population, suicide is the fourth leading cause of death (Rao et al., 2015; Rao & Hong, 2016). Many athletes are idolized as the epitome of health and wellness (Rao, 2018); however, student-athletes are known to underutilize mental health resources, fear stigma (Wahto et al., 2016), and have documented negative attitudes towards help-seeking (Martin et al., 2004), all of which act as barriers to mental health resources for athletes. The purpose of this evidence-based practice project was to develop, implement, and evaluate an educational program for coaches and athletic staff on suicide risk assessment for collegiate student-athletes with the initiation of appropriate follow-up care. The objective of this project was to determine if the self-efficacy scores of athletic coaches and staff change in response to the educational intervention. This project utilized the Suicide Prevention Gatekeeper Self-Efficacy Scale (Takahashi et al., 2021) to measure levels of self-efficacy before and after the educational program. The educational program was developed as a complex intervention, utilizing the Question, Persuade, Refer (QPR) training program incorporating didactic, observational, and role-play learning. A sample of twenty-eight coaches and athletic staff from a suburban private catholic university in the Northeast region of the United States participated in this project. Coaches and athletic staff employed by the athletic department working with athletes as a part of their professional role were invited to participate. The findings of this project indicated that providing education to coaches and athletic staff is an effective intervention in increasing their self-efficacy of gatekeeper skills for suicide prevention in collegiate student-athletes. This project accentuated the need for FNPs to expand their role as educators within the athletic community health setting to benefit student-athlete mental health and wellbeing.
