Thesis (Ph.D.)--Palo Alto University, 2023.
Athletic performance can be impacted by a myriad of factors: some mental, some physical, and some environmental (Weinberg & Gould, 2014). Collegiate athletes experience unique environmental and physical stressors compared to non-athlete peers, including pressure to perform, media attention, scholarships, and competition. Researchers have found that when athletes experience sport anxiety, it negatively impacts performance by increasing muscle tension and unhelpful thoughts. (Aherne et al., 2011; Thomas et al., 2007; Weinberg & Gould, 2014). Mindfulness is also thought of as a mental mode that may lead to improved cognitive functioning, health, and psychological wellbeing (Hart et al., 2013). This is commonly referred to as trait mindfulness. Researchers found that trait mindfulness was related to fewer worries about performance (Rothlin et al., 2016). Five facets of trait mindfulness have emerged in the literature: observing, describing, acting with awareness, nonjudging of inner experience, and nonreactivity towards inner experience (Baer et al., 2008). Researchers found that these facets are negative predictors for anxiety, depression, and stress (Soysa & Wilcomb, 2013).This study sought to provide pilot data about trait-related mindfulness in female college athletes using a mixed-method approach. Participants were recruited via Listservs in Spring 2022, using a snowball sampling strategy. Participants (n=10, 100% White; Mage=19.9) self-reported mindfulness traits using the Five Facet Mindfulness Questionnaire-15 (FFMQ-15; Baer et al., 2006). Participants then self-reported symptom acuity of generalized anxiety, sport anxiety, and depression. A multiple-case study design was utilized to examine their response using a normative-ipsative comparison approach. Data from the surveys were re-coded in two ways: (1) scores on the standardized measures were compared to community psychometric norms and converted to z-scores for normative comparison [normative], and (2) critical item analysis was done to identify specific scale items where participants responded in extremes (e.g., 1's or 5's on Likert) [ipsative]. A qualitative thematic analysis was then utilized to examine themes amongst the participant responses. The results provided information on how trait mindfulness, sport anxiety, and athlete performance presented in college female athletes during an acute stressor, such as the COVID-19 pandemic. Future research should be conducted in absence of the COVID-19 pandemic.
