Thesis (D.B.A.)--Northcentral University, 2023.
Student-athletes' persistence to graduate has been a consistent topic of debate. The lack of information from the student-athletes' perspective about what impacts their persistence has created a gap where institutions, coaches, and sporting agencies lack the proper support system to ensure their success. This qualitative phenomenological study examined a two-year Northeast United States National Collegiate Athletic Association (NJCAA) institution's student-athletes' perspectives on persistence to graduate and the motivations behind it. The study is guided by the conceptual framework of Maslow's Hierarchy with connection to Tinto's theory of Retention and Persistence. There were 19 student-athletes recruited through purposive sampling technique that participated in semi-structured interviews. Data collected was analyzed using Moustakas' modification of Van Kaam's method from bracketing and horizontalization to reduction, and formation of themes. The results indicated that the persistence of the student-athlete is driven by family expectations and support, career and academic ambitions, and the help of the respective coach. The internal and external factors created emotional, intentional behavior, a motivational, and external stimuli impacts that helped to determine the persistence of the student-athlete. Student-athletes view institutional leaders as mentors, counselors, surrogate parents, and agents of academic support. The results indicated that student-athletes' persistence is heavily dependent on a strong support system. Persisting to completion creates opportunities for higher education degree accomplishments and generational change in poverty. Listening to their stories and experiences showed that a student-athlete seeks support, guidance, and acceptance to feel that level of connection to their groups, whether athletic or academic. Recommended future research includes extending this study to 4-year institutions to continue shedding light on persistence from the student-athlete perspective, making literature more accessible about the topic.{A0}
