Thesis (Ed.D.)--Northcentral University, 2023.
Prior to 1972, female athletic coaching was an idea that was unheard of. The realm of athletics was a man's world. Women were discouraged from participating in sports, let alone coaching them. Even following the enactment of Title IX in 1972, this act was not taken seriously until its enforcement three years later. Title IX was the forefront of women's rights in the athletic field. It stated that any institution receiving federal funds could not discriminate against any person due to gender. The problem is, despite the efforts of Title IX and its right of private action, the female collegiate athletic coaching population has seen a decrease in the years since the enactment of Title IX, despite specific legislative aims to increase this participation. The purpose of this phenomenological qualitative research case study was to determine whether having experience with female youth athletic coaches affects the coach gender preference of collegiate athletes of NCAA Division I institutions. The theoretical framework used in this study was constructed using the feminist theory. Participants included four collegiate athletes from two NCAA Division I institutions. Two participants were male, one was female, and one was transgender. Open-ended interviews were conducted through Zoom, and results were analyzed using Atlas.ti. Themes that emerged from the data analysis were that all participants had a male coach gender preference. There were a higher number of negative experiences with female coaches than male coaches, and there were a higher number of positive remarks for male coaches than female coaches by the participants. Results indicated that all participants had experiences with both male and female youth coaches. Participants had more positive experiences with male youth coaches than female youth coaches, and more negative experiences with female youth coaches than male youth coaches. Participants all had a male coach gender preference in collegiate athletics at the time of the interviews. Future research may be indicated using a larger population as well as non-athletes who had experiences with youth coaches.
